What would you expect to find at a destination that’s halfway between two world-renowned landmarks? You should meet Toulon, a bit west of the Marseille and little east of the St. Tropez. In the middle is prime French Riviera real-estate, and Toulon looks the part. For one, the modern cityscape was designed by renowned 19th century city planner Baron Haussmann, whose resume also includes Paris itself. But things here started millennia ago with ancient Greeks and Romans, and go right up to more modern times — it’s hard to miss the scenery of France’s largest naval base, the iconic clock tower and famous cathedrals. Let’s not forget that we’re also not a long drive from the vineyards of Aix-en-Provence. Head up there and you’re in for the sights, the scents and the flavors of, ahhh, wine country.
