This is a predominantly nature-focused tour that circles the dormant central volcano Hengill — located just a short ride away from Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik. You will make a stop at the geothermal plant Hellisheiði, where you will stop at the visitor center to learn a little about geosciences, geothermal technology, the environment and the history of the area. You’ll continue to the town of Hveragerdi, located on top of an old magma chamber responsible for the abundance of hot springs that bubble and hiss all around this little community. Head further on to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its historical and geological importance. You will go from one continent to another as you cross the neovolcanic rift zone that slices through Iceland from northeast to southwest. The drive back to Reykjavik takes you through a lunar-like landscape of volcanic phenomena and other geological wonders.
